Patxi Meabe, Pako Etxebeste, Arturo Garcia and Joxemari Muñoa, members of Etiker, have reflected and proposed alternatives about which tax model we need in an opinion article published in the Berria newspaper.

I’m sick of having to pay taxes on everything and the rich get off scot-free! Be smart, do like me and pay as little as possible to the Treasury. If, at least, we could see some good results in the services we need… These and other similar expressions, we have said them or we hear them frequently around us.

And from the Foral Treasury we are told: “Our taxation is an adequate tool to generate wealth and, in turn, it has provided us with the necessary financial sufficiency to be able to advance in the reinforcement of public policies in Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, Araba”.

Opinions also abound on the need for tax reform. There is no agreement on the direction the reform should take: some advocate lowering direct taxes, so that everyone can do what they want with their money. However, they also demand that public services should be of high quality and easy to use when they are needed, for example, in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic or the devastating consequences of the DANA suffered by populations in the Mediterranean and the south of the peninsula. But is this desirable, and what model of society do you have in mind?
