The empowerment of the Provincial Councils in the consolidation of the Spanish liberal State (1839-1877)

Joseba Agirreazkuenaga

Within the framework of the doctoral program in contemporary history at the UPV-EHU, on November 11, 2015, we invited Professor Pedro Carasa to carry out an evaluation of research on political elites and, in particular, prosopography. A critical vision that stemmed from the conferences that he had organized in Sedano years ago. The attendance of doctoral students and researchers was large, more than 50 people listened to their explanations and participated in the subsequent debate. After carrying out a general overview of the genesis and evolution of studies on political elites and the use of said category in contemporary sociology, Pedro Carasa came to the conclusion that said analyses, instead of explaining, blurred more than expected. precisely the main question that a social investigation should pursue, the identification of power in its different manifestations and the social networks that sustain and reproduce it. In his opinion, the research carried out until then did not address an explanation of the management of powers. Consequently, for future research, he recommended that the focus focus on power and its forms of exercise, with multilevel observation scales to more accurately explain the dynamics of social change.
